Contact UsWhat’s the deal with disposable hairdressing gowns? Sure, they are more hygienic but they aren’t necessarily great for your wallet or the environment.
Stop right here!
This might have been true in the past but we’ve found a solution for this dilemma. We’re here to let you in on everything you need to know about disposable hair gowns.
Our disposable hairdressing gowns are called Biocapes. They’re typically used to protect your clients from hair, water and splashes of colour; essentially, all the stuff that usually gets splattered about during a hair appointment.
We decided to produce Biocapes as a solution for the swathes of plastic capes that became popular because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As you can imagine, we weren’t too happy about all the waste this caused.
Scrummi hair gowns are a little different from your traditional capes. Whilst your average hair gown is made from fabric, Biocapes are made from plastic-free, plant based PLA. In simple terms, our hairdressing gowns are created from the same material as food-caddy bin liners.
So, why are Biocapes the better option? We’ve broken down all the benefits of using our disposable hairdressing gowns.
One word: laundry. Not only does doing the laundry take up a lot of your valuable time, but washing machines require a lot of energy. In fact, the average hair salon uses on average around 40,000 kWh of electricity every year, which works out to over £4,000 annually.
With a disposable hairdressing gown, there is no need to stick them in the washing machine, so hours of washing will be saved and, most importantly, you’ll save money on those bills. So, they’re definitely worth a try if you are trying to decrease overheads.
Speaking of energy bills, we all know that salons need a lot of energy to operate. From blow dryers and hair tools to the salon lighting itself, there’s no way to eliminate energy use in the salons. It’s no wonder that hair salons are one of the biggest consumers of energy among small businesses!
Using these vast amounts of energy every year can have detrimental effects on the environment. Not only does electricity generation contribute to 40% of global CO2 emissions, but it produces huge amounts of waste and is using up our non-renewable resources.
Whilst we know hair salons cannot operate without electricity, there are many ways to reduce your consumption, one being to use disposable hair gowns along with disposable hair towels to eliminate the use of washing machines in salons.
You might be thinking that because our hair gowns are disposable, they are just going to end up in a landfill and damage the environment. This could not be further from the truth.
Biocapes are 100% biodegradable and compostable and have been certified by TUV Austria, and are additionally stamped with the Seedling Logo.
This means that you can dispose of them with other organic waste or in a bagless bin, and they will biodegrade. This process results in zero waste at the end, and actually helps the environment. So rest assured, Biocapes are perfect for environmentally friendly salons.
So, they’re eco friendly and can save you money, but do Biocapes actually do what they say on the tin? After all, there is no point switching to a sustainable option if it doesn’t fulfill its basic purpose.
The answer is yes – Biocapes are entirely water and colour proof. This has been tested by painting colour and bleach directly onto the gown. We could describe the results, but we think it’s much more valuable to see them for yourself:

The environment and overhead costs aside, we can all agree that there has been a big focus on hygiene throughout and following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Putting a fabric hairdressing gown through the wash will never kill 100% of bacteria. This might be concerning to some when you know that the average hair stylist sees around 12 clients per day.
Disposable hairdressing gowns remove the need to even think about hygiene. Every gown is single-use, so every client gets their very own gown and it is then thrown away. You can’t get more hygienic than that!
More and more consumers are valuing important social and political issues, such as the environment and the protection of animals. It can be tricky for some people to find the most sustainable, cruelty-free or vegan options when it comes to getting their hair done.
However, with Biocapes, you are becoming available to a whole new customer base. Clients will love that your attention to detail comes down to the hair capes themselves, and that they are eco-friendly, vegan and cruelty-free.
