Earth Day Every Day: Our sustainability journey, past, present and future

For us, Earth Day isn't a moment. It's a reminder of what we're already doing every single day. As a certified B Corp, sustainability isn't a campaign or a checkbox, it's built into everything we make, every partnership we form, and every decision we take. Here's where we've been, where we are now, and where we're going.

Where it all started

Scrummi was born from a simple but powerful observation. In 2008, our founder Rob Cooper realised that the laundry cycle running through salons and spas across the UK was one of the industry's most overlooked sources of waste, water, energy, chemicals, and time, consumed day after day, in every treatment room in the country.

Two years of research and testing later, the first Scrummi biodegradable towel launched in 2010. Not just a disposable alternative to cotton, a genuinely better one. Softer, more hygienic, more convenient, and with 90% less environmental impact than a traditional salon towel.

That was the beginning. But we never planned to stop there.

What we've built since

Over the past 15 years, sustainability has remained at the core of every decision we've made. Achieving B Corp certification is one of the things we are most proud of, it holds us accountable to independently verified standards of social and environmental performance, and pushes us to constantly improve. Every product we make, from our hair towels to our facial mitts, is designed to replace a laundry-heavy alternative with something biodegradable, plant-based and better for the planet.

Sustainability isn't just about what we make, it's about how we show up in the world. We've been proud to partner with Communigrow, a sustainable food education charity in East Malling, Kent, volunteering, fundraising and donating our biodegradable towels to power their composting machine. From treatment room to compost,  that's a full circle we are genuinely proud of.

Where we are right now

Today, Scrummi products are used by thousands of salons and spas across the UK and beyond, including industry leaders like L'Oréal, Clarins, Toni&Guy and Champneys. Every single one of those businesses is reducing their environmental footprint simply by making the switch.

We are also now an official Patron of the British Beauty Council, working alongside industry leaders and policymakers to shape a more sustainable future for professional beauty across the UK.

But we're not done.

What comes next

Our ambitions for the future are clear.

Carbon net zero We are committed to reaching carbon net zero. Every decision we make, from sourcing to shipping to disposal, is being reviewed and improved with that goal in mind.

Packaging Our packaging just got an upgrade, and it was a long time coming. Our Hair Towels are now available in brand new packaging that is plastic-free, compostable and biodegradable. The same luxury waffle feel, now embossed, in packaging designed to look as good on your shelf as our towels perform at the basin. Hygienic, easy to store and space-saving, because better choices should feel effortless.

Expanding our impact We want to bring more beauty professionals into a genuinely sustainable way of working. That means better education, better resources, and better products, so that choosing the eco-friendly option is always the easy option.

It doesn't stop today

Earth Day is a brilliant moment to reflect and recommit. But for us, the work continues on the 22nd of April, and the day after that, and every day that follows.

If you are a hair or beauty professional thinking about what sustainability really looks like in your business, we would love to help you get there.
